妻に買ってもらったSpheroのR2-D2。発表されたときには興奮したし、動きも音も映画そのままのリアルさだ。しかし不満点も多い。最初だけ英語で説明しているが、下に日本語で記してある。動画はSpheroより。
Briefly in English: Sphero R2-D2 isn't as smart as it is advertised.
Good: It looks, movies, sounds real, like in movies.
Bad: Sphero says "Your Droid maps out collisions with objects in the room and sends information back to you, which includes readings on his speed, temperature, and a graph of his motions around your space." But according to Sphero Customer Service personal...
1. Droid does detect collisions, but that's just for data purposes. It doesn't prevent the droid from any collisions. (It doesn't stop its movement after colliding with things neither. So pretty much meaning less.)
2. "Temperature" shown on the Patrol Mode screen is fake. "You are correct that the temperature shown in the app is imaginary. " the support said. R2-D2 doesn't have any thermometer. There is no such information to "send back to you".
Also, hairs tend to be tangled with its gears, and it slows down my R2 and sometimes stops its movement. I have asked the Sphero support how to fix this, does Sphero provides information about how to disassemble the "feet" of the R2 unit, the support says "we do not recommend taking apart R2-D2 in any way. We suggest using chemical free wipes to clean the treads".
So Sphero's R2-D2 is definitely not something you can imagine from Sphero's description. But still it does looks, moves, and sounds similar to what we have seen in the big screen. Surely it recreates the R2-D2 in the series, but only the moves and sounds, and it is as stupid as a cheap robot toy that only walks and beeps. What's making this R2 worse than those cheap silly robot toys is that it also require you to have a decent modern smart phones to play it. Without a smart phone, it's just an overpriced statue of R2-D2.
(also, the app doesn't work well with BlackBerry KeyOne. The app freezes when launching the app, and when connecting with the R2, each time, for few minutes.)
Spheroは結構都合の良い宣伝の仕方をしている。「パトロールモード」では「ドロイドが部屋の中のオブジェクトとの衝突をマップ化し（map out）、情報をあなたに送ります、これには速度、気温、あなたの周りを移動した動きなどが含まれます」などとSpheroは記しているのだが、Spheroサポートに連絡したところ、以下の事実が判明した。
1．ドロイドは衝突を認識するが、これはデータのためのもので、データは衝突しないようにするために活用されるわけではない。（それになにかにぶつかった後に動きを止めることもない。衝突が認識できても何の役にも立たないわけだ。）
2．「気温」の部分はアプリに表示されるのだが、サポートによれば温度計はR2には内蔵されていないとのことで、アプリに表示される気温表示は「想像上のもの」だと認めた。
また、髪の毛などがギアに絡まり、移動速度が低下したり、動かなくなったりすることもあるので、サポートにどうやって分解すればよいのか尋ねたが「分解することはお勧めしません。ゴムタイヤをケミカルフリーワイプで拭いてください」と明後日な返答。
映画と同じ動きと音を上手く再現してはいるが、Spheroの商品説明から購買者に想像させるよりも賢くない代物だ。その点ただの動いて音のするちゃちなオモチャと変わりない。そんなちゃちなオモチャよりも劣る点としては、ある程度の性能を持ったスマートフォンなくしてはこのR2は動きもしないことだ。スマホ無しではただの値の張るR2-D2のスタチューでしかない。
（あと、BlackBerry KeyOneではアプリが起動時とR2への接続時に毎回数分にわたりフリーズする）
